LEDVANCE, the LED lighting company, is showcasing the third generation of its state-of-the-art HQL LED lamps at Light + Building – even more compact, weighing even less, more versatile and with new lumen packages and light colors. They are therefore the efficient and modern successors to the traditional mercury vapor lamps (HQL) and sodium vapor lamps (NAV), which have partly been banned from the market by legislators and which are still in widespread use in countless street lights throughout Europe. For street lights that will continue in service for many years to come, the new HQL LED lamps are the instant solution offering optimum light for towns and cities on a tight budget.
The new HQL LED lamps with the OSRAM brand name will be available from wholesalers from July 2018. Good news for energy suppliers, local authorities and wholesalers because the traditional HQL lamps that are widely used in street lights have been banned from sale since April 2015 and existing stocks are running out. Their most important task however, namely providing bright high-quality light (4,000 K) in towns and cities for safety and security reasons, is as important as ever.
Also affected by legal restrictions are the NAV lamps, which produce a typical yellowish light (2,000 K) and which are used in many cities, particularly in historic centers, to create a pleasant atmosphere.
The third generation of the new HQL LED lamps from LEDVANCE is available in three types for the ubiquitous E27 screw socket and the equally common E40 socket.
What makes these lamps so attractive for customers and installers alike is the fact that as direct replacements for conventional HQL lamps the LED lamps can be used with the conventional control gear (CCG) and compensation capacitors usually found in existing street lights without the need for any rewiring. Simply remove the old HQL lamps and screw in the new LEDVANCE lamps.
Weighing between 400 grams and 1,370 grams, the new lamps are very similar to their traditional predecessors. They also save on space, with diameters from 7.5 to 11 cm and lengths of 14.5 to 27 cm. The advantage here is that thanks to these compact dimensions and relatively low weights the LED lamps are suitable for almost all existing fixtures, in either the horizontal or vertical burning position. They all have an IP65 rating so they are unaffected by moisture, dirt or insects, for example if the luminaires themselves are poorly sealed. The same applies to fluctuations in the ambient temperature in a range from -20 to +50 degrees Celsius, and in some cases even +60 degrees Celsius. Luminous flux ranges from 3,000 lumen to 13,000 lumen with a very good efficiency of 133 lumen per watt. Two other features that all the new models have in common are their exceptionally long operating time of up to 50,000 hours and the choice of two popular light colors – 4,000 K for basic lighting and 2,700 K for atmospheric lighting.
Local authorities can therefore look forward to savings in electricity costs of up to 60 to 75 percent compared to the old HQL and NAV lamps, much longer life and the continued use of existing fixtures. HQL LED lamps from LEDVANCE will therefore have paid for themselves after only 12 to 18 months.
For local authorities with very tight budgets, the new HQL LED lamps are also available in even cheaper “value” models with a life of up to 30,000 hours, an IP54 rating and an efficiency of 120 lumen per watt. These lamps also come in light colors of 2,700 and 4,000 K.
