LEDVANCE develops a sustainable and modern lighting concept for the Ulrich-Haberland Stadium of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, perfectly combining the requirements of UEFA with efficiency and sustainability interests.

THE CHALLENGE

The Ulrich-Haberland Stadium is home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen's women's Bundesliga team. To meet UEFA's Level-D requirements for hosting European Cup matches, the stadium's lighting needed to be upgraded with LED technology and the brightness increased. The modernization also took into account the impact on nearby residential areas and the highway, considering issues like glare and ambient light levels.

THE SOLUTION

LEDVANCE developed a sustainable and customized lighting concept for Bayer 04 Leverkusen in both indoor and outdoor areas. As part of this, the Ulrich-Haberland Stadium underwent modernization, with the four existing floodlight poles being replaced by modern arena floodlights. Additional floodlights were installed, including some on a specially constructed 30-meter high mast, to ensure optimal light distribution and an illuminance level of 800 lux.

THE BENEFITS

The existing stadium infrastructure was largely integrated into the new lighting concept. The improved light quality and intensity of the arena floodlights now comply with UEFA Level-D guidelines. Furthermore, the reduced glare from the floodlights minimizes the impact of ambient light on the highway and adjacent residential area. The longer lifespan of the luminaires also reduces future maintenance efforts, resulting in positive effects on costs and sustainability.

SUMMARY

By constructing a new floodlight mast and replacing the existing luminaires with intelligent arena floodlights, not only was the brightness and distribution of the lighting optimized, but also the maintenance effort was reduced.
